Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner
Choosing the right firewood is crucial for reducing creosote build-up in your chimney flue.
Select the Right Type of Wood
Hardwoods like oak, maple, and hickory are ideal choices for firewood when it comes to keeping your chimney flue cleaner. These types of wood are dense and burn at higher temperatures, providing more heat and less smoke. A cleaner burn means less creosote, a sticky residue that builds up in chimneys and poses a fire risk.
Avoid burning softwoods, such as pine, as they tend to produce more resin, leading to an increased amount of creosote. Additionally, never burn treated wood or construction scraps. They can release harmful chemicals and significantly increase creosote deposits in your chimney.
Ensure Proper Seasoning of Wood
Well-seasoned firewood is essential for an efficient and cleaner burn. Wood should be split and allowed to dry for at least six months before use. Properly seasoned wood will have a moisture content of 20% or less. You can check this with a moisture meter, which gives an accurate reading of the wood’s readiness for burning.
Burning green or unseasoned wood leads to more smoke and creosote buildup. To ensure wood is seasoned, look for visible signs such as darkened ends with cracks, a hollow sound when two pieces are knocked together, and lighter weight compared to freshly cut wood.
Storing Firewood Correctly
Proper storage of firewood is important to maintain its dryness and readiness for burning. Stack wood off the ground on a pallet or similar structure to prevent moisture absorption from the soil. Cover the top of the stack with a tarp or firewood cover, leaving the sides open for air circulation.
Store wood at least 20 feet away from your home to reduce the risk of pests invading your home. Arrange wood in a single row with plenty of space between pieces to allow air to circulate, which further aids in the drying process. By taking these precautions, you’ll have high-quality firewood that burns cleaner and helps keep your flue in good condition.
